Career MOTIVATION & Mission

Saving lives takes much more than medicine.

Abdalla began studying to become a doctor in late 2023 at only 18 years of age, as conflicts around the world intensified and people starved, despite record food production of nearly 10 million tonnes, enough to feed every human being on Earth.

Medicine Today

On its own, practicing medicine is no longer enough to save lives. Less than half of Africans have access to essential healthcare. In the US, nearly one-fifth of prescriptions are never filled.

Multidisciplinary Work

All fields of work are directly affected by political & economic crises, which prevent access to even the most basic of medication and resources, causing millions of preventable deaths.

Journalism & Media

Human stories need to be told humanly enough. People today are less empathetic toward victims of poverty, hunger, disease, and war – who are presented as mere numbers on a screen.

Healing Earth

All large movements begin small. All global movements begin local. All international movements begin nationally. A large movement is a group of smaller movements, working hand in hand.

For those with nowhere else to go, Education City, with its countless financial aid options enabling third-world students to receive first-world educations, is like a small pocket of light and hope in a never-ending sea of darkness and despair. For many, Education City has made the difference between having a bright, hopeful future, and having no future at all.

The socioeconomic understanding of the world that Georgetown University in Qatar instilled in me continues to inspire the way I apply and practice medicine today, in a way different to most of my colleagues. I’ve realized that today more than ever before, saving lives takes much more than medicine, and that medicine only treats people equally when society does.

As a medical student, I am privileged to be able to help others — billions of people want to help for any number of reasons, but simply don’t know how. Reflecting on this, I’ve realised that nothing in the world brings me more joy than helping strangers and waving goodbye, knowing I may never see them again, than contributing and improving the lives of others in the smallest of ways, than helping heal Earth’s oldest wounds, one patient at a time.
